The State Working Committee (SWC) of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi State has thrown its weight behind the party’s State Chairman, Prince Enyinnia Alum Udensi, dismissing allegations of crisis within the party and warning against what it described as “transactional politics” capable of undermining the organisation’s growth and cohesion.
The party leadership made its position known in a statement issued on Friday in response to a viral video and media reports in which some individuals purportedly passed a vote of no confidence on Udensi and the party’s State Organising Secretary.
The SWC described the development as a calculated attempt to create a false impression of instability within the party and discredit its leadership.
According to the statement, the individuals featured in the video lacked the authority to take such action on behalf of the party and did not represent the official structures of the NDC in Ebonyi State.
“The allegations of hijack, compromise and manipulation levelled against the State Chairman, the State Organising Secretary and distinguished stakeholders of our party, including the purported passage of ‘vote of no confidence’, are baseless, unfounded and exist only in the imagination of the conveyors of the meeting and its writers,” the statement read.
The SWC expressed concern over what it termed attempts by the State Secretary, Adum Solomon Chinedu, to portray himself as a defender of party values despite, according to the leadership, not having played a significant role in building the party’s structures in the state.
The party maintained that while Chinedu was welcomed into the organisation and entrusted with a key constitutional office, he had allegedly chosen a path of public confrontation rather than working towards strengthening the party.
“That members of the public should note that the State Secretary was not among those who laid the foundation of the party in Ebonyi State. Nevertheless, he was welcomed, accommodated, and entrusted with a sensitive constitutional office. Regrettably, rather than utilizing that office to strengthen the party, he has chosen the inglorious path of needless confrontation and public attacks against the same platform that is giving him political relevance,” the statement added.
The leadership also condemned what it described as repeated attempts to drag former Governor of Ebonyi State, Senator Sam Egwu, into internal disagreements within the party.
It said Egwu remained a respected political leader whose contributions to democratic governance and the development of Ebonyi State were well documented.
“We are particularly disturbed by his repeated attempts to drag the name of His Excellency, Senator Dr. Sam Egwu, into matters that have absolutely nothing to do with him. Senator Sam Egwu remains a respected political leader whose antecedents and positive contributions to the development of Ebonyi State and democratic governance are well known. The attempt to make him a subject of personal grievance and internal disagreements is irresponsible, unfair, and unacceptable,” the statement noted.
Defending Udensi’s leadership, the SWC described him as a stabilising figure who had demonstrated maturity and fairness in steering the affairs of the party despite challenges and internal pressures.
The committee consequently rejected the purported vote of no confidence, declaring it “null and void” and inconsistent with the party’s constitution and procedures.
“Most disturbing is the disgusting attempt to pass a vote of no confidence on our State Chairman, who has shown extreme wisdom and maturity even in the midst of provocations and uncertainties in ensuring that NDC treads on the path of equality, fairness, and justice for all party members, old and new.
“We therefore dismiss and strongly condemn the damaging allegations vented on the Chairman and urge members of the public to disregard the purported passage of a vote of no confidence on the Chairman and Organising Secretary, even as we declare it null, void and inconsistent, being that the characters are utterly alien to the party, its constitution and procedural workings,” it stated.
The SWC further urged Chinedu to tender a public apology to the party leadership and desist from what it called efforts to malign party executives and stakeholders.
Beyond the immediate controversy, the statement highlighted deeper concerns about personal interests and political bargaining within the party, warning that such tendencies should not be allowed to override collective goals.
“It’s important to note that because he failed with his transactional politicking can’t be a justification for the campaign of hostility, misinformation, and division presently being championed by the State Secretary. We urge him to quickly retrace his steps and realign with the party’s leadership both at the state and national levels,” the committee said.
The party also sought to clarify what it described as factual inaccuracies in Chinedu’s claims, noting that the primary election referenced in his statement took place on May 29, 2026, and not May 30 as alleged.
The leadership reaffirmed its commitment to reconciliation, party unity, and preparations for future electoral contests, insisting that it would not be distracted by what it termed unnecessary media battles.
“The leadership of the party remains committed to peace, unity, reconciliation, and the advancement of the NDC in Ebonyi State. We have no intention of engaging in endless media exchanges. Our responsibility is to build the party in a virile manner and prepare it for future electoral success come the 2027 general elections and beyond,” the statement added.
The SWC urged party members and supporters to remain calm and focused on strengthening the NDC across Ebonyi State, stressing that the party’s collective interest must always take precedence over individual ambitions.
“The NDC is bigger than any individual ambition, grievance, or personal expectation. No member should place personal interests above the collective interest of the party,” the statement concluded.
