The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has cautioned Nigerians against a fraudulent online message claiming that a free National Identification Number (NIN) correction portal has been opened for data updates.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, the commission described the circulating message and its embedded links as a phishing scam designed to mislead and defraud unsuspecting members of the public.
The agency stressed that there is no such free “correction portal” being promoted via social media and urged Nigerians to ignore any unauthorized links requesting personal or identity information.
“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission stated.
It further reassured citizens that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from unauthorized access or compromise.
The commission advised Nigerians to rely strictly on its official communication channels and approved platforms for any NIN modification or data correction processes.
It added that individuals seeking updates or corrections to their records should use the official self-service portal or visit accredited enrollment centres nationwide.
NIMC also urged the public to avoid clicking suspicious links and to report any misleading messages circulating online, noting that fraudsters are increasingly targeting identity-related services to deceive users.
The warning comes amid rising concerns over digital scams and phishing attacks targeting sensitive personal data across Nigeria.
