The South-West Coordinating Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr Adegoke Fayoade, has assured Nigerians that efforts are underway to secure the safe rescue of schoolchildren and teachers recently abducted in Oyo State.
Speaking with journalists on Monday during an official visit to the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja, Fayoade said security agencies were working closely to ensure the victims regain their freedom as quickly as possible.
According to him, government authorities and security operatives are coordinating rescue operations aimed at returning the victims safely.
Responding to reports that the abductors had demanded ransom, the DIG said the police do not engage in ransom negotiations, stressing that their priority remains the safe recovery of those in captivity.
Fayoade explained that his visit to the command was part of efforts to strengthen supervision, review operational strategies and improve responses to emerging security challenges nationwide.
He said concerns raised during engagements with officers included manpower shortages, welfare issues and logistics needs, adding that measures were being implemented to address them. He noted that ongoing recruitment exercises would help boost personnel strength across the country.
The DIG also highlighted the Nigeria Police Force’s increasing use of technology, including a centralised data system and artificial intelligence, to enhance intelligence gathering and criminal investigations.
He urged police officers to remain professional and uphold human rights while carrying out their duties, adding that effective policing requires cooperation between security agencies and the public.
