Some Lawmakers Never Raise Their Hands In The National Assembly, But Win Elections – Saraki

Former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has urged Nigerians to demand better representation from all elected officials, not just the President.

Speaking particularly about legislators, Saraki charged the citizens to watch and ask for feedback from their elected representatives.

According to him, if citizens ask for legislative records, the National Assembly will get better because the lawmakers will be on their toes.

The former Governor of Kwara State, who spoke during an interview with Vanguard, lamented that some lawmakers don’t make contributions to debates during plenary in the National Assembly, but still win elections every four years.

“The singular greatest reform that could make the National Assembly better will cost the government nothing.

“It is citizens who watch, ask, and vote on legislative records — not just presidential personalities.

“You see legislators who keep winning elections, and for four years they have not even raised their hand to speak. But they will win anyway. “While those who are active, because they cannot do what you want when they return to their constituencies, do not win,” he said.

Naijaonpoint reports that Saraki also called for electoral reforms to ensure the right people are elected, which in turn contributes to building a strong institution.

“Until we have a process that ensures the right people are elected, the foundation remains weak.

“If there is one single thing we take away from here, it is that we must go back and ensure we have a process where the right people are elected,” he added.
