“You’re Killing Us,” UNIOSUN Students Decry Alleged Negligence Over Death Of 400-Level Colleague

Students of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), Ifetedo Campus, have staged a protest following the death of a 400-level Criminology and Security Studies student, Grace Osunlakin, accusing the institution of negligence over the poor state of its healthcare services.

In a viral video from the protest, visibly emotional students accused the university management of failing to provide functional medical facilities despite collecting fees from students.

“You claimed you built a hostel and clinic for us, but none of them are functioning. There are no nurses or doctors. We paid school fees and everything, but you’re just extorting us,” one of the protesting students declared.

The students further lamented what they described as the deteriorating welfare situation on the campus.

“Every single day we’re losing students. Our parents trust you; that’s why we are here. If you can’t keep our mental health, let us go. UNIOSUN, you’re killing us here. We’re tired of this. If you can’t save us anymore, just leave us,” the student said.

They also alleged that the campus clinic was deserted when Osunlakin reportedly suffered a medical emergency.

“Nothing is functioning in the clinic you built. No doctor or nurse is available there. We took a sick student to the clinic, but there was no one to attend to her. We are paying school fees for this. We need help, and we are making this go viral. If you can’t help us, then release us,” the protesters added.

Although the exact circumstances surrounding Osunlakin’s death remain unclear, students alleged that her health complications began on Wednesday evening after the university’s medical facility had reportedly closed for the day.

Reacting to the incident, the university management, in a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and announced that thorough investigation had commenced.

The university said it was taking the matter with the utmost seriousness and pledged to uncover the facts surrounding the student’s death.

The school management also assured that if investigations establish that any medical personnel or staff acted negligently or failed in their professional responsibilities, appropriate disciplinary action would be taken in accordance with the university’s regulations and extant laws.

“Management of Osun State University has received with deep sorrow the reports surrounding the unfortunate death of one of its students in the College of Law. This painful development has understandably generated concerns among students, parents, stakeholders, and members of the public.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the university is taking the matter with the utmost seriousness and has commenced a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident,” the statement read partly.

The institution appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its full course while refraining from speculation that could compromise the process.

Meanwhile, the university has announced the indefinite closure of the Ifetedo Campus following the protest.

According to the management, the decision was taken to allow emotions to subside and to enable a comprehensive assessment of healthcare facilities, medical personnel and water supply systems on the campus.

The university added that the closure forms part of broader efforts to address longstanding challenges at the campus and to ensure the safety, welfare and well-being of students and staff while measures are put in place to prevent a recurrence.
