Teachers and pupils abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State have regained their freedom after spending about 50 days in captivity, bringing relief to their families, colleagues and the state’s education community. The victims were released following security operations coordinated by relevant agencies, according to statements issued by government officials and education stakeholders.
The Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (OYOSUBEB) described the development as a moment of thanksgiving, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, hailed the release as a significant relief for teachers, learners and parents.
Both organisations commended the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government and security agencies for their efforts in securing the victims’ freedom. They also acknowledged the support of traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society organisations, labour groups, media practitioners and other stakeholders who stood by the affected families during the ordeal. The NUT urged governments at all levels to strengthen security around schools and communities to ensure that teachers and learners can carry out their activities in a safe environment
.Similarly, OYOSUBEB reaffirmed its commitment to supporting initiatives that promote safe and secure schools across the state. The release of the victims has been widely welcomed, with stakeholders expressing hope that continued investment in school security will help prevent similar incidents in the future.
