Why Oyo schools cannot perform beyond current level – APC gubernatorial candidate, Sharafadeen Alli
Gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congres, APC, in Oyo State, Senator Sharafadeen Alli, has declared that no public school in the state can perform beyond its current level.
Alli noted that this is because public schools in the state are not being given the necessary funds and subventions needed to thrive.
Alli, who represents Oyo South Senatorial District on the platform of the APC, made these declarations while addressing journalists at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Ibadan on Monday.
The APC candidate, while speaking on the state of education in the state, explained that the state produced some of the best results a few years ago.
Alli, however, regretted that the state’s education sector is currently declining due to the involvement of consultants and the non-release of subventions and funds to schools to enable them perform optimally.
He explained that schools, especially tertiary institutions in the state, are run by consultants whose motive is to make money at the detriment of quality education and the people of the state.
He also explained that public primary and secondary schools in the state are being starved of the needed subventions and funds, hence they cannot perform beyond their capacity.
He said that the state was known as one of the best in the country in the area of education, noting that this performance led the Universal Basic Education (UBE) to donate a Hilux van to the state in 2006 in recognition of its outstanding performance.
He, however, lamented that the state is now at the bottom of the ladder.
The APC candidate, while addressing the journalists, insisted that public schools in the state cannot perform beyond their current level because the current administration has refused to give them the necessary support.
Alli said, “Our tertiary institutions in Oyo State are not doing well because the schools are run by consultants. Running grants are not being given to the schools unlike before.
“Government is supposed to give schools running imprests, subventions and funds to maintain the schools. If you don’t give them, how do you expect them to perform well?
“In WAEC, we were among the top, but now we are in 27th position. The schools are bushy, they cannot pay for gardeners, and you asked parents not to pay school fees.
“We were in this state in 2006 when UBE gave Oyo State a Hilux van because of our outstanding performance. We are now in 27th position in WAEC. Aside from that, we also need to give our youths vocational training.”
