Area Boys Feeds Thief With Banku And Groundnut Soup, Makes Him Weed As Punishment After Being Caught Stealing Phone 

Residents of Ejisu in the Ashanti Region have devised an unusual form of community justice after allegedly catching a phone thief, choosing to feed the suspect a meal before putting him to work cutting grass as punishment, an approach that has attracted considerable attention and amusement on social media.

A video circulating on the Ghanaian internet shows the shirtless young man first seated in the grass eating from a banku and a bowl of soup, and subsequently bent over cutting grass by hand in the same outdoor location, apparently serving out the community’s improvised sentence.

The incident though looks harsh, mirrors a recurring pattern of community-based justice in Ghanaian towns and villages, where suspected thieves are sometimes subjected to unconventional punishments by local residents rather than being handed over immediately to the police.

In this instance, the community’s response has been widely noted for its relative restraint and creativity compared to the mob violence that often accompanies such confrontations elsewhere, feeding the accused before putting him to work rather than resorting to physical assault.
