A mobile money vendor fought back against two armed robbers who allegedly attacked him in Lashibi, fatally shooting one of the suspects and recovering the full GH¢140,000 stolen during the robbery.
According to the Accra Regional Police Command, the incident occurred on Friday, July 3, 2026.
Police said the two suspects, who were riding on a motorbike, allegedly opened fire on the vendor’s vehicle, damaging the rear tyre and windscreen before making away with the cash.
However, as the robbers attempted to escape, the vendor reportedly returned fire, fatally hitting one of the suspects. The second suspect fled the scene, abandoning the bag containing the stolen money, which was later recovered intact.
The vendor was not injured during the exchange.
In a statement signed by Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Regional Police Command, police disclosed that a search of the deceased suspect led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition, an additional 11 rounds of ammunition, GH¢3,000 in cash, a Samsung mobile phone, and an identification card bearing the name Innocent Elemuwa Akachukeu, aged 46.
Investigators also recovered five AK-47 shell casings and two pistol shell casings from the scene.
The body of the deceased suspect has been deposited at the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation, autopsy, and formal identification.
Police say investigations are ongoing as officers intensify efforts to arrest the fleeing suspect.
The Accra Regional Police Command has appealed to anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the police through the emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
