Delta Govt Holds July Sanitation Exercise, Enforcises Environmental Laws

e Delta State Government on Saturday, July 25, 2026, successfully conducted its monthly environmental sanitation exercise across the state, with restrictions placed on human and vehicular movement to ensure effective participation.

The State Ministry of Environment monitoring team, led by the Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Moses Ogodo, carried out inspections in Udu Local Government Area to sensitize residents and enforce environmental regulations. In Asaba, the State Capital, the Commissioner was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Victor Chike Ogbugo, who led the monitoring team.

Addressing residents, Mr. Ogbugo urged them to refrain from indiscriminate dumping of refuse, warning that such practices degrade the environment and pose serious health risks. He advised households to provide waste bins and adopt proper waste management practices.

The Permanent Secretary also encouraged residents to register with approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for regular waste evacuation, while calling on the PSP operators to improve service delivery and respond promptly to the needs of residents. He assured Deltans that the Ministry would continue to strengthen efforts to ensure efficient refuse evacuation across the state.

In Oshimili South Local Government Area, the Chairman of the Environmental Taskforce, Comrade Nwaka Chukwudi, led a team of officials and equipment to enforce compliance with environmental sanitation laws.

Observations during the exercise showed a high level of compliance along Nnebisi Road and in many parts of Asaba, as residents largely observed the restriction on movement. Major locations, including the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Junction and Ibusa Junction, were barricaded by environmental taskforce officials to ensure the success of the exercise.

Speaking with journalists, Comrade Chukwudi emphasized that maintaining a clean environment is the collective responsibility of all citizens, noting that government’s role is to provide awareness, coordination, and enforcement.

He explained that an unclean environment breeds diseases that could lead to hospitalization, stressing that compliance with environmental laws is essential for healthy living. According to him, the monthly sanitation exercise is designed to promote public health and create a cleaner, healthier Delta State.

Comrade Chukwudi further warned against indiscriminate disposal of refuse, stating that blocked drains and waterways often result in flooding and other environmental hazards. He advised traders, restaurant operators, and residents to patronize only approved Private Sector Participants (PSPs) for waste disposal rather than cart pushers and wheelbarrow operators who frequently dump refuse at unauthorized locations.

He urged members of the public to obey environmental laws at all times, stressing that environmental cleanliness enhances the beauty of the state and improves the quality of life. He warned that anyone found violating environmental regulations would face the full weight of the law.
