Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ekiti State Sector Command, has commenced a five-day intensive enforcement exercise aimed at ensuring strict compliance with the Road Transport Safety Standardization Scheme (RTSSS) across the state.
A statement by the command’s Assistant Public Education Officer, Mr Obinna Egesie, said the Sector Commander, Mr Sanya Adeoye, who personally led the commencement of the exercise, said it was ordered by the Corps Marshal.
The operation targets commercial transport operators, fleet owners and motorists who fail to comply with established road safety regulations. According to the FRSC, the exercise is designed to improve safety standards, reduce road crashes and ensure that transport operators adhere to statutory requirements.
Speaking on the exercise, the Sector Commander said enforcement officers will focus on key violations, including failure to maintain the new legal passenger manifest, non-registration of fleet operators, overloading of passengers and goods, illegal construction of extra seats in vehicles, school bus violations and speed limit infractions.
Adeoye said that the exercise was part of a nationwide drive to standardise road transport operations and reduce road crashes across the country.
He also said that the command in collaboration with stakeholders would target 10 major infractions during the period.
According to him, enforcement will focus on non-compliance with new legal passenger manifest, non-registration of fleet operators, overloading of passengers and goods, illegal construction of extra seats, school bus violation and speed limit violation.
Others he said were over speeding and dangerous driving, failure to fix certification stickers, use of worn-out and substandard tyres and other RTSSS infraction stipulated by FRSC Nigeria.
The sector commander said that the objectives of the exercise include creating awareness among fleet operators, and enhancing enrolment of unregistered operators into the RTSSS database.
He said that patrol teams, RTSSS desk officers and mobile courts have been deployed to motor parks, highways and school zones.
He also said that defaulting operators and drivers risk arrest, prosecution and their vehicle impounded.
Adeoye said that the fleet operators, transport unions and school authorities have been advised to regularise fleets, install functional speed limiters and fix certification stickers.
He urged members of the public to report violators through the FRSC tolls-free line 122.
