Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has provided ₦50,000 each to 1,112 street traders, roadside vendors and vulcanisers across the state’s 44 local government areas to support their businesses and livelihoods.
The intervention was announced during the distribution of the grants at the Government House in Kano, according to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Yusuf said the initiative was designed to provide working capital for petty traders and help them expand their businesses. He acknowledged that the grant might not address all the beneficiaries’ financial challenges but said it would provide support and improve their purchasing power.
The governor said the intervention was the second phase of the empowerment programme for the group, noting that 465 street traders benefited during the first phase.He also announced plans for another round of support before the end of the year to reach more young petty traders and improve their productivity.
Yusuf thanked the beneficiaries for their support and confidence in his administration, saying their encouragement would motivate the government to sustain people-focused policies and programmes.
The Director-General of the Cottage Trade and Street Hawking Agency, Ahmed Abubakar Bichi, said the agency was established under the Office of the Governor to improve the welfare and economic conditions of street hawkers, roadside traders, vulcanisers and other informal-sector operators across the state.
