He Deserves The 20 Years — NPP Communicator Breaks From Party Line, Welcomes Chairman Wontumi’s Imprisonment

An NPP communicator has welcomed the imprisonment of the party’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi, saying he is pleased that individuals accused of abusing public office and misusing state resources are being held accountable.

“Any of you who would go and protest against the imprisonment of Chairman Wontumi, I know you are also a thief,” the communicator said, arguing that Wontumi’s actions were driven by self-interest with little regard for the welfare of ordinary Ghanaians and that he deserves the consequences he is now facing.

The remarks stand in sharp contrast to the NPP’s official position since Wontumi’s conviction and 20-year sentencing in the Samreboi illegal mining case.

Party leadership, including General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, has described the conviction as “politically motivated” and labelled Wontumi a “political prisoner,” with a formal appeal already underway.

Senior figures including Dr Mahamudu Bawumia led a high-profile delegation to visit Wontumi at Nsawam Prison, while Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman Kwabena Nsenkyire has publicly appealed to President Mahama for leniency, describing the sentence as excessive.

The identity of the communicator making these dissenting remarks has not been specified. It is unclear whether the comments reflect a broader, if quieter, current of opinion within party ranks or represent an isolated position.
