Nollywood actor and former Mr Nigeria, Ugo Nwokolo, has responded to the backlash surrounding his recent comments about internet fraud and the current state of Nigeria’s economy.
The actor sparked a heated debate online after discussing the financial struggles faced by many Nigerians, especially low-income earners and civil servants, during a video conversation.
While addressing the rising cost of living, Nwokolo questioned how individuals earning between ₦50,000 and ₦90,000 monthly can comfortably afford accommodation in major cities such as Abuja and Lagos, where rent prices have continued to soar, with some properties costing millions of naira annually.
He noted that many people who can afford such expensive homes are often among the country’s wealthier class, adding that some individuals in this category are involved in internet fraud.
The actor further stated that, despite the criminal nature of cyber fraud, the money generated from such activities still finds its way into the economy through spending and circulation.
However, Nwokolo stressed that his comments should not be interpreted as support for illegal activities, explaining that he was only highlighting the harsh economic realities facing Nigerians.
Following the widespread criticism of his remarks, the actor returned to social media to clarify his position.
Taking to his X account on July 28, Nwokolo stated that he does not support fraud or Yahoo Yahoo, insisting that he was only responding to a question about whether internet fraud has had any impact on the economy.
He wrote:
“I will never support FRAUD OR YAH00. The question asked was: Do you think yahoo has contributed to the economy and I said Yes! IMO. Come to think of it, is it the civil servant whose salary is 100k that will buy all those overpriced houses in lekki. Y’ll are hypocrites.”
Despite his explanation, the actor’s statement continued to generate reactions, with many Nigerians still debating his views on internet fraud, wealth, and the country’s economic challenges.
