Keta Students Wade Through Floodwaters To Reach School As Compound Remains Submerged

Schoolchildren in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region have been filmed wading through knee-deep floodwaters to access their school, with large sections of the school compound remaining submerged following recent heavy rainfall in the area.

A video ibynews.com has intercepted shows pupils in white school uniforms navigating floodwater that has inundated the school grounds, with the school’s toilet facilities also surrounded by water in the background, raising serious concerns about sanitation and the safety of the learning environment.

The scenes from Keta mirrors the disproportionate impact of Ghana’s flooding crisis on coastal communities in the Volta Region, which has historically been among the most flood-vulnerable areas in the country due to its low-lying topography, proximity to the Keta Lagoon, and the effects of coastal erosion and sea-level rise.

Ghanaians have called for affected schools to suspend in-person learning during flooding events, citing the health risks associated with floodwater contact including waterborne diseases as well as the physical danger posed to young children navigating flooded terrain.
