King Charles III has paid tribute to the enduring relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States as Americans marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Although the historic document, signed on July 4, 1776, declared America’s independence from British rule, the King said the two countries have transformed centuries of shared history into a strong and lasting partnership built on mutual respect and common values.

In a message addressed to US President Donald Trump and the American people, King Charles described the UK-US relationship as one founded on friendship. He said both nations have worked together through generations of challenges and achievements, strengthening trust and a shared commitment to liberty, democracy, the rule of law and human dignity.
Looking ahead, the King expressed confidence that the close ties between both countries would continue to grow stronger.
“As we look ahead to the next 250 years, I have no doubt we will continue to defend our shared values,” he said, adding that the bond between the British and American people would remain strong for generations to come.
The anniversary is being celebrated across the United States with parades, concerts, fireworks and other patriotic events. In Washington, DC, President Donald Trump is expected to lead the national celebrations, which include military flyovers involving hundreds of aircraft and a major fireworks display. Trump has described this year’s event as the “largest fireworks show in history.”
Celebrations are also taking place in cities across the country. In New York’s Times Square, the famous New Year’s Eve Ball will drop eight times to mark midnight across each of America’s time zones. Meanwhile, Philadelphia, where the Declaration of Independence was signed 250 years ago at Independence Hall, is hosting a grand concert featuring performers such as Christina Aguilera and Meek Mill.
The King’s message comes just weeks after he and Queen Camilla visited the United States for the first official British state visit since Queen Elizabeth II travelled there in 2007. The visit took place during a period of political tension, following the UK government’s decision not to become directly involved in the conflict involving Iran.
During the trip, King Charles addressed the US Congress, urging American lawmakers to continue supporting Ukraine and remain committed to NATO, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in maintaining global security.
Despite occasional political differences between the two allies, officials have described the personal relationship between King Charles and President Trump as warm and respectful. A senior royal aide said the pair got along well despite expectations that the relationship might prove difficult.
President Trump also offered high praise for the British monarch, describing King Charles as “the greatest king in my book,” underscoring the friendly tone that continues to define relations between the two longstanding allies.
