LAGOS – A potentially devastating fire disaster was averted on Friday after emergency responders contained a blaze involving a leaking gas tanker at the Owode Elede area along Ikorodu Road, ensuring that traffic remained largely unaffected.
The incident occurred when a six-tyre mini gas tanker developed a mechanical fault while travelling toward Ikorodu.
During emergency assessment, officials discovered that compressed gas was leaking from the vehicle before it ignited, sparking a fire around the tanker.
Personnel of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded swiftly to the scene, launching a coordinated emergency operation that brought the fire under control before it could spread to nearby properties, vehicles or road infrastructure.
Authorities said the prompt intervention prevented what could have become a major inferno, protecting lives and property along one of Lagos’ busiest transport corridors.
To minimise disruption to commuters, LASTMA officials implemented temporary traffic management measures by opening an alternative route through one serviceable lane alongside the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor.
The arrangement enabled vehicles to continue moving under controlled conditions while emergency crews worked to extinguish the fire.
Traffic along the affected section of Ikorodu Road remained orderly, with only minimal delays reported during the emergency operation.
LASTMA General Manager commended the coordinated efforts of the agency’s rescue team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, describing their rapid response as crucial in preventing a potentially catastrophic incident.
He urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and cooperate with emergency responders whenever incidents occur on the roads.
The traffic management agency reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property through prompt emergency response, efficient traffic control and continuous collaboration with other emergency services across Lagos State.
