Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, has said the government is considering banning teachers from recording and posting videos of students on TikTok and other social media platforms, as part of a wider push to strengthen discipline in schools.
Haruna Iddrisu said he had only been shown examples of such videos during an interview and would study the practice further before making any formal policy announcement.
He indicated that the planned review would extend beyond just filming, examining the broader use of mobile phones by both students and teachers, saying, “I’m likely to make some far-reaching decisions and to guide matters relating to the use of the phone, both by students and teachers during classroom hours and outside classroom hours.”
The minister pointed to a troubling rise in indiscipline, citing reports of students carrying guns and cutlasses to school, assaulting teachers, damaging property, and engaging in examination malpractice as evidence of the need for stronger measures.
A national conference bringing together religious leaders, educationists, and students is expected to examine the root causes of indiscipline and propose practical solutions.
The comments come as the ministry grapples with a string of high-profile school crises this year, including a Savannah Region teacher who went on the run after videos allegedly showing inappropriate conduct with a female student surfaced publicly.
