Traders, particularly those in the Ogbeogono Market and all other markets in Asaba, have been warned to desist from the sale of the African Wild Mango, popularly known as Ogbono or risk severe consequences.
Recall that the Asagba of Asaba, HRM Prof Epiphany Azinge SAN, reiterated the ban when he recently addressed Asaba women (Ikpoho Ahaba), and frowned at the continued flagrancy of the tradition.
At a press conference yesterday, the Omu of Asaba, Obi (Dr) Ada Biosah, reechoed the monarch’s stance, stressing that there will be consequences if the tradition is flouted.
“We are going to have stringent measures put in place to make sure that the sale of Ogbono does not continue in our town. I am going to make sure that all the union heads, the taskforce agents in the markets, are aware of this pronouncement and will be watching skillfully.
“Anyone who sells this commodity in the market, not only will your stock be confiscated, but you will be banned and seriously. Also, there will be spiritual and traditional sanctions. We will deal with you traditionally and spiritually,” the Omu said.
Corroborating the Omu, the Onihe (Chief Priest) of Asaba, Obi Ubaka Attoh, said the sale of the Ogbono seed is affecting the Asaba community spiritually, stressing that the Asaba people and the Niger River Goddess, Onishe, forbid it.
“Like what the Omu has said, we will inform all the union leaders, the market leaders, the local government, and the task force. We will also use the traditional mode of mass communication to go around and sensitise our people.
“Get one thing clear. We are not stopping people from eating it in their individual houses, but do not sell it openly,” the Onihe said.
