The Ogun State Government has expressed deep appreciation to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) for its support in the successful search and recovery operation following the tragic building collapse at Baale Road, OGS Bus Stop, Ajuwon.
While commending the spirit of inter-state cooperation, the government clarified the sequence of events to ensure accurate public understanding of the emergency response.
According to an official statement, the Ogun State Government activated its emergency response immediately after the incident occurred on Monday, under the directive of Governor Dapo Abiodun. Key agencies, including the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSEMA), alongside security agencies and other stakeholders, were swiftly deployed to the scene.
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, supported by Craneburg Construction Company, promptly mobilised critical equipment, including two payloaders, a heavy-duty excavator and ten dumper trucks. This rapid deployment enabled search and recovery operations to commence within minutes, significantly improving access to the site and accelerating rescue efforts.
Recognising the proximity of the incident to the Lagos State border and the need for additional support, the Ogun State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development reached out on Monday to his Lagos State counterpart, as well as the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA. The Lagos emergency response team subsequently arrived on Tuesday, July 28.
By the time LASEMA officials joined the operation, Ogun State teams, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), security agencies, and other responders, had already been engaged in intensive search and recovery efforts for over 18 hours, with substantial excavation and recovery work completed.
The government also commended the Executive Chairman of Ifo Local Government, Hon. Kusimo Idris Olalekan, and his team for their tireless overnight efforts in maintaining order, supporting responders, and ensuring the safety of residents in the affected community.
Ogun State further extended its gratitude to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the leadership of LASEMA for responding promptly to its request, describing the collaboration as a reflection of the shared commitment between neighbouring states to protect lives and property.
Authorities noted that the successful operation was the result of a coordinated effort involving Ogun State agencies, Ifo Local Government, NEMA, the Nigeria Police Force, Amotekun Corps, Craneburg Construction Company, community volunteers, and the subsequent support from LASEMA.
With the emergency phase concluded, the Ogun State Government has commenced a comprehensive technical investigation to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse. It assured that any violations of building regulations, planning laws, or approved standards will attract appropriate legal and regulatory actions.
The government reiterated its commitment to enforcing strict compliance with physical planning and building regulations across the state. Developers and property owners were advised to secure necessary approvals, engage qualified professionals, and conduct regular structural integrity assessments.
Ogun State also extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It appreciated residents of the community for their cooperation and resilience, which contributed significantly to the orderly conclusion of the emergency response.
