The Eagle Brain Human Rights Organization (EB-HRO) has called for the release of activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, expressing concern over his continued detention and its implications for freedom of expression and civic space in Nigeria.
In a statement issued in Kaduna and signed by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Comrade Daniel Ejembi, the organisation said the Nigerian Constitution guarantees the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and due process. It also referenced Nigeria’s obligations under international human rights agreements.The group argued that detaining individuals in connection with criticism of public officials could have implications for democratic accountability and civic participation.
EB-HRO called on the relevant authorities to either release Sowore if there is no lawful basis for his detention or arraign him promptly before a court of competent jurisdiction. It also urged that he be granted access to legal representation, family members and medical care where applicable.The organisation further called on the government to uphold the rule of law and ensure that no individual is detained beyond the period permitted by law without being brought before a court.
Ejembi said the group remains committed to promoting constitutional rights, including freedom of expression and access to justice. He urged the authorities to ensure that all legal processes involving Sowore are conducted in accordance with the law.
