The investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance has taken another unexpected turn after three people detained during the search accused the Pima County Sheriff’s Department of wrongly targeting them.
Carlos Palazuelos, along with Josefina and Daniel Maddox, filed notices of claim seeking a combined $3.25 million in damages, alleging they were falsely linked to the high-profile case despite never being charged.
Palazuelos is seeking $2.5 million after claiming deputies arrested him at gunpoint, detained him for several hours, and later released him without filing charges.
Meanwhile, Daniel Maddox is requesting $500,000 after allegedly being handcuffed and held outside the family’s home during the search, while homeowner Josefina Maddox is seeking $250,000 for property damage allegedly caused when deputies executed a search warrant.
Family Says Public Scrutiny Continued After Release
5According to the legal filing, Palazuelos claims the ordeal did not end upon his release. He alleged the experience left him feeling “as though he himself had been kidnapped.” He said his family has since endured public attention, including being followed and photographed because of their association with the investigation.
The claim further alleges that the search warrant relied on “false or baseless evidence” and that investigators lacked probable cause to connect Palazuelos to any crime.
It also accuses Sheriff Chris Nanos and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department of publicly portraying him as a person of interest while refusing to clear his name later, according to ABC15.
