The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending terrorism and banditry across Nigeria, declaring that it is more determined than ever to restore peace and security nationwide.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, made the declaration on Friday in Abuja during the Peace and Security Summit Award.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the SGF, Mr. Aminu Yar’Gaya, Akume said the government remained resolute in tackling insecurity while urging the media to support the effort through responsible and balanced reporting.
He stressed that while attacks by terrorists and bandits should continue to be reported, media organisations should also give prominence to the sacrifices and successes of security personnel, as well as the experiences of victims.
“We are concerned about reportage of banditry and terrorism in the country. We are not saying attacks should not be reported, but all sides should be reflected,” he said.
“Stories of terrorism should be reported in a fair manner on the part of our gallant military and the victims.
“Government is doing a lot regarding the fight against terrorism and banditry, and we are determined to do more.”
Akume noted that the media has a crucial role to play in supporting the military and other stakeholders involved in the fight against insecurity by promoting accurate and balanced information.
