CanaanLand Golf Club Unveils Plans for International Ladies Tournament, Road Race and Cycling Championship
The Chairman of CanaanLand Golf & Country Club, Hon. Felix Aganbi, has reaffirmed the club’s commitment to positioning Koko, headquarters of Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, as a leading destination for sports, tourism and recreation in Nigeria.Speaking in Koko, Aganbi said the club’s long-term vision is to leverage sports development to drive economic growth, youth engagement and tourism in the community.
According to him, the club will host an International Ladies Golf Tournament in 2027 under the auspices of the Lady Golfers Association of Nigeria (LGAN). The event is expected to attract participants from golf clubs across Nigeria and other West African countries.Aganbi also announced plans for the Koko Marathon, a 10-kilometre road race, and the Koko Cycling Open Championship, a 40-kilometre individual time trial event.
“We are engaging relevant sporting authorities, including the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Hon. Philip Shaibu, to support the successful implementation of these initiatives,” he said.He noted that Koko possesses significant advantages for hosting major sporting events, citing its strategic location between Warri and Benin City, peaceful environment, accessible road networks, scenic waterways and reputation for hospitality.
Aganbi explained that sporting events have the potential to stimulate local economic activity by attracting visitors who patronise hotels, restaurants, transport operators, artisans and other small businesses.He added that such events could also generate positive publicity, attract investment opportunities, encourage infrastructure development and create meaningful opportunities for young people.
The chairman disclosed that CanaanLand Golf & Country Club currently accommodates several sporting and recreational activities, including golf, badminton and table tennis, while work is ongoing to expand its golf course into a 72-par championship-standard facility.He assured that the club would continue investing in facilities capable of supporting regional and national sporting events.
“What started as the development of CanaanLand Golf & Country Club is gradually creating opportunities to attract visitors, sporting enthusiasts, businesses and investors into our community. We believe this momentum presents an opportunity that should be embraced for the benefit of Delta State and the Warri Kingdom,” Aganbi said. He called on stakeholders, sports enthusiasts and the wider public to support efforts aimed at promoting sports and tourism development in Koko.
