Donald Trump delivered a wide-ranging speech at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on 24 July, mixing humor with political commentary and criticism of the media.

Speaking at Washington’s Waldorf Astoria months after a shooting disrupted the original event, the president joked about congressional term limits, defended free speech and condemned political violence.

Donald Trump’s jokes during his lengthy speech, however, fell flat on multiple occasions, prompting the politician to call out the writers.

President Donald Trump took the stage at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Dinner on 24 July, nearly four months after a shooting incident disrupted the original event.

Speaking before guests at Washington, D.C.’s Waldorf Astoria, Trump mixed policy remarks with humor, though one of his jokes appeared to fall flat with the audience.

While discussing the idea of imposing term limits on members of Congress, the president shared an anecdote about an aging senator who allegedly received a message from his wife asking him to come upstairs and be intimate when he returned home.

According to Trump, the senator replied that he could not manage both tasks, a punchline that was met with little reaction from those in attendance.

“All joking aside, I do think we need term limits in Congress. I think term limits are very important because I see what’s happening. I see what’s happening,” the POTUS began.

“The other day, a senator I knew got a text, a great guy, from his wife, and she said, when you get home, I want to have you immediately come up the stairs and make love to me. And he said, I can’t do both,” Trump rambled on. “You know what? You know? In other words, you can’t go up the stairs and make love.”

Noticing the muted response, Trump poked fun at the speechwriters responsible for preparing his remarks.

“Does anybody get that one? I thought that was actually pretty good. That was actually the only thing I thought was good in this whole freaking stupid speech that they wrote,” he told the crowd, expressing surprise that it failed to generate much laughter.

He then attempted to explain the joke further, linking it back to his argument that older lawmakers should face term limits.

Ahead of the event, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had previewed Trump’s appearance, describing it as “unifying, yet vicious,” adding: “One thing I can assure you, it will be entertaining.”

The dinner was originally scheduled for April but was postponed after authorities said alleged gunman Cole Tomas Allen opened fire during the gathering in what investigators described as an attempted assassination plot targeting the president. Secret Service agents quickly detained Allen after the incident.

First Lady Melania Trump did not attend the rescheduled dinner. Reports indicated that ongoing security concerns influenced her decision to stay away from the event.

Trump’s comedic attempts at the WHCD have since gone viral as multiple clips circulate online, leading to the president being dragged for the jokes, which many labeled “awkward” and “embarrassing.”

One X user wrote in a post with almost 4 million views, “I thought this was a fake quote but, nope, he actually said it. This is the most embarrassing person to ever lead any country anywhere in the world in our lifetimes.”

Another noted, “It’s painful when someone explains a joke. It’s excruciating when Trump does it.”

A harsh critic commented, “Ladies and gentlemen….Your president, a simpleton, a dunce, a buffoon, a mouth breathing meat stick with the rizz of 3rd rate insult comic way past his prime. Go to bed, Pee Paw.”

“Unironically this joke is pretty decent, he just can’t deliver a joke properly because he has the worst delivery known to man,” another individual said of Trump’s attempt at comedy.

Despite delivering several sharp jabs during his speech, Trump also used part of the evening to call for unity and condemn political violence. Praising the work of the Secret Service, Trump told attendees that disagreements in America should be resolved through discussion rather than force.

“In this country, we believe in freedom of speech,” he said. “We settle our differences not with bullets, but with open and vigorous debate. And no deranged loser with a gun will ever change that.”

He later lightened the mood with a joke about heightened security measures at the event, quipping that some guests had been reluctant to wear “because they’d rather die than look 20 pounds heavier.”

The president also turned his attention to the media, highlighting what he sees as the influence of major news organizations while criticizing several CNN journalists by name.

CNN chief executive Mark Thompson responded with a statement defending the network’s reporting and editorial independence.

“We stand by our journalists and the integrity and fair-mindedness with which the CNN team reports the news,” Thompson said, per reports. “Honest, accurate journalism may sometimes irritate politicians, but our right to report and present that reporting to the public without government interference is fully protected by the US Constitution.”

Trump reserved warmer comments for media executives he considers friendly, including Larry Ellison and David Ellison. The pair, who gained control of Paramount last year, are currently pursuing a deal to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of CNN.

Referencing Paramount’s ownership of CBS News, Trump praised David Ellison and predicted he would bring significant changes to the broadcaster while preserving some of its strengths.

The president also joked about recent leadership changes at CBS News under editor-in-chief Bari Weiss, whose appointment has generated considerable discussion within media circles.

“Under my administration, a once-feared and powerful regime that relentlessly attacked America has finally been toppled. Their former leaders have been removed, and they’re now being run by a gay dictator facing internal divisions,” he said.

While making light of the network’s internal upheaval, Trump ultimately wished Weiss success in her role, describing her as “a wonderful woman.”
