UK-Based Nigerian Lawyer Applies to Renounce Nigerian Citizenship

By Abigail David

A UK-based Nigerian lawyer, Baron Chymaker, says he has formally commenced the process of renouncing his Nigerian citizenship.

Chymaker disclosed the development in a post on X on Thursday, stating that his legal representative in Nigeria had submitted the application to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and paid the required processing fees.

“I have today received a confirmation from my lawyer in Nigeria that my application to renounce my Nigerian citizenship has been submitted to the SGF and all fees paid as appropriate. I cannot wait for the approval,” he wrote.

Chymaker is known on X for commenting on international law, legal practice in Nigeria and the United Kingdom, and cryptocurrency-related issues.

He has previously expressed criticism of aspects of Nigeria’s judicial system, including the application of the doctrine of judicial precedent, also known as stare decisis. He has also encouraged Nigerian-trained lawyers to pursue further professional qualifications or explore legal practice opportunities in other jurisdictions.

As of the time of filing this report, the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation had not publicly commented on Chymaker’s application or its status.
