WAFCON 2026: Super Falcons Begin Title Defence Against Malawi as Tournament Heats Up in Morocco
Nigeria’s Super Falcons will kick off their quest for an unprecedented 11th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title when they face Malawi on Tuesday night in Morocco, as the continental showpiece gathers momentum.
The highly anticipated clash, scheduled for 9:00pm, marks Nigeria’s opening fixture in Group C and comes shortly after Zambia take on Egypt in the group’s earlier encounter at 6:00pm. Both matches are expected to set the tone in what is already shaping up to be one of the most competitive groups in the tournament.
WAFCON 2026 roared into life on Sunday with a flurry of action in Group A. Algeria drew first blood with a convincing 2-0 win over Senegal, while hosts Morocco thrilled their home supporters with an emphatic 4-0 demolition of Kenya to top the group after the opening round.
Monday’s fixtures in Group B delivered early drama and upsets. Tanzania stunned reigning champions South Africa with a 2-1 victory, throwing the group wide open, while Ivory Coast flexed their attacking strength in a dominant 4-1 triumph over Burkina Faso.
All eyes now turn to Nigeria, Africa’s most decorated women’s national team, as they return to defend the crown they reclaimed in 2024. The Super Falcons, with a record 10 titles, remain the benchmark of excellence in African women’s football and are widely tipped as favourites once again.
However, the road to glory in Morocco is far from straightforward. Hosts Morocco, buoyed by their opening win and strong home support, are eager to improve on their runner-up finish in 2022. South Africa, despite their early setback, still possess the pedigree of former champions, while Zambia continue to emerge as a formidable force and potential dark horse following their recent rise on the continent.
This year’s edition is the largest in WAFCON history, featuring 16 teams divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group will progress to the quarter-finals, while the four semi-finalists will secure automatic qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
