Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced plans to close the Konduga Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp and resettle displaced residents, following the closure of the Bama camp and plans to shut the Gwoza facility.
Zulum made the announcement during a visit to Konduga, where he said the resettlement process would be voluntary and that no displaced person would be forced to return to an area against their wishes. “We are not carrying out the resettlement process immediately. We are here to discuss with the IDPs so that in the next four months they will be resettled in a dignified manner,” the governor said in a statement issued by his media aide, Abdulrahman Bundi.
Zulum said the government would continue to engage displaced persons to determine their preferred destinations, including their ancestral communities. During the visit, the governor inspected ongoing housing construction at the Amarwa resettlement site in Konduga Local Government Area. He later visited Maiwa in Mafa LGA, where additional housing units are being developed.
According to the statement, the projects include basic facilities such as a primary healthcare centre and water infrastructure to support returning residents. Zulum was accompanied by federal and state lawmakers, the Commissioner for Local Government and Emirate Affairs, Sugun Mai Mele, and other government officials.
