The 2027 governorship candidate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Kaduna State, Rt. Hon. Usman S. Bawa, has described former Governor of the state, Senator Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi, as a statesman whose contributions to Kaduna State and Nigeria have continued to shape the country’s democratic space.
Popularly addressed as ABG, Bawa stated this in a congratulatory message to Makarfi to mark his 70th birthday, describing the former governor’s life of public service as one defined by vision, humility, intellect and commitment to good governance.
The ex- Governor served Kaduna State from 1999 to 2007, a period Bawa said witnessed important initiatives in infrastructure, education and healthcare.
According to the 2027 PDP candidate, the Makarfi administration laid foundations that contributed to the development of the state while also promoting an inclusive approach to governance.
He said Makarfi demonstrated a commitment to ensuring that government remained accessible to citizens regardless of their ethnic, religious or social backgrounds.
Bawa also commended the former governor for his efforts towards promoting religious harmony and peaceful coexistence in a state as diverse as Kaduna.
He said Makarfi’s approach to governance underscored the importance of unity and fairness in managing a multi-ethnic and multi-religious society.
Beyond his tenure as Kaduna governor, Bawa highlighted Makarfi’s role in national politics, particularly his leadership of the PDP National Caretaker Committee chairman.
“Makarfi served as chairman of the committee during a challenging period in the history of the opposition party, following an internal crisis that threatened its stability”, he said.
Bawa said the former governor displayed political maturity and restraint during the period, adding that his leadership contributed efforts to stabilise the party and restore confidence among its members.
He described Makarfi’s national political intervention as evidence of his commitment to democratic institutions and the development of a strong opposition capable of contributing to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The Kaduna PDP governorship candidate further described Makarfi as a mentor and bridge-builder whose political conduct had influenced younger politicians.
According to him, the former governor has consistently advocated equity, practical inclusiveness and respect for the rule of law throughout his years in public service.
Bawa said Makarfi’s ability to engage people across political, religious and social divides had earned him a reputation as a voice of reason within the political space.
He added that the former governor’s example remained relevant at a time when Nigeria needed leaders committed to dialogue, tolerance and responsible democratic participation.
Bawa extended his birthday greetings to Makarfi on behalf of his family, supporters across Kaduna State and members of the PDP in the state.
He expressed gratitude to God for preserving the former governor to attain the age of 70 and for the opportunity he had to serve the people of Kaduna State and Nigeria.
He prayed for continued good health, strength and wisdom for the former governor, while wishing him many more years of meaningful contribution to the state, the country and humanity.
Bawa said Makarfi’s experience and counsel remained valuable to the younger generation of political leaders and expressed hope that his legacy of public service would continue to inspire them.
“May your legacy endure, may your counsel continue to guide us, and may your light never dim,” he said
