2027: Nenadi Usman Tasks Politicians On Patriotism, Tolerance

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Senator Nenadi Usman, has called on political leaders across the country to embrace patriotism, tolerance and issue-based politics as Nigeria prepares for the next electoral cycle.

Usman made the call in Jos during the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State and old Benue State Governor, Senator Jonah David Jang. She said national progress depends on leaders placing the country above personal and partisan interests.

The Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, disclosed Usman’s remarks in a statement issued in Abuja.

Usman noted that political competition is vital to democracy but must not degenerate into bitterness or destroy Nigeria’s social fabric.

“The next election should not be a battle against fellow Nigerians. It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we must all return to the same Nigeria. That is why patriotism must always be greater than politics,” she said.

The LP chairman stressed that Nigerians deserve leaders who unite rather than divide, and who build bridges across political, ethnic and religious lines. She added that political parties may differ, but the country remains one.

Usman urged politicians and their supporters to reject inflammatory rhetoric.

“History does not remember those who shouted the loudest. It remembers those who built the strongest institutions, protected democracy and put their country first,” she added.

She further warned that democracy cannot thrive where intolerance replaces dialogue.

“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy flourishes where there is tolerance, respect for differing opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace,” Usman said.

Usman described the elder statesman as a patriot whose service in the military, as governor, and as senator earned him a respected place in Nigeria’s history.
