Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu has warned politicians against recruiting, funding or mobilising young Nigerians for political violence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Disu issued the warning on Thursday in Abuja at the National Youth Leadership and Security Dialogue organised by the Nigeria Police Force to mark the 2026 International Youth Day.

The police chief said the force would protect the electoral process and work towards peaceful elections but would not shield anyone involved in violence, voter intimidation, weapon use or destruction of property.

“We will not tolerate the recruitment or mobilisation of young Nigerians for political violence,” Disu said.

He urged politicians across party lines not to arm youths, fund violent activities or incite them against fellow Nigerians.

Disu also warned political actors against promising protection to youths after encouraging them to commit crimes, noting that electoral violence could have long-term consequences for the younger generation.

“Nigeria cannot build a secure and prosperous future by destroying the generation that is expected to inherit that future,” he said.

The IGP further raised concerns about social media, warning that political violence can begin online before moving into the physical space.

His warning has generated reactions online, with some Nigerians calling for politicians themselves to be held accountable while others questioned whether similar warnings would translate into action during the election period.
