Adeleke Constitutes Committee to Verify Election Violence Victims, Oversee Disbursement of N500m Relief Fund

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has constituted a 10-man Committee on Election Violence Victims to verify claims by persons affected by election-related violence and oversee the disbursement of the N500 million Election Violence Victims Relief Endowment Fund.

The committee, chaired by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Olumide Egbedun, is expected to conduct a transparent verification process to establish genuine claims and ensure that the relief reaches deserving victims.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, the committee is expected to “undertake a transparent and credible verification process to establish genuine claims and ensure that relief reaches deserving victims.”

The committee has Egbedun as Chairman, while Mrs Eniola Omotoso, Mr Emmanuel Olowu, representing Civil Society Organisations, Alhaja Balkiss Akinleye, a nominee of the Nigeria Police Force and Alhaji Moshood Suleiman of the Ministry of Information.

Others are: Moses Faremi, Esq., of the Ministry of Justice, a nominee of the Department of State Services, Hon. Yemi Lawal and Mr Sola Sonibare, Executive Secretary of the Osun Investment Promotion Agency, who will serve as Secretary, are members.

According to the statement, the committee had been mandated to “receive and verify petitions, claims and supporting evidence submitted by victims; determine the eligibility of claimants; and recommend appropriate relief to verified victims in accordance with the guidelines approved by the State Government.”

It added that the initiative underscored Governor Ademola Adeleke’s commitment to supporting citizens who suffered “losses, injuries, displacement or other forms of hardship as a result of election-related violence.”

The government therefore called on affected persons with genuine claims to cooperate with the committee by providing accurate information and relevant evidence needed for the verification exercise.

It also assured that the N500 million relief fund would be administered transparently and fairly, stressing that it would be used “strictly for the benefit of verified victims.”

The committee is expected to commence the process of receiving and verifying claims as part of efforts by the state government to provide relief to victims of election-related violence.
