At least nine passengers have been killed after gunmen opened fire on a commercial bus at Dungus Junction in Kuru community, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The passengers were reportedly travelling to Jos when the attackers struck at about 9:40 p.m. after the driver stopped at the junction to drop off some passengers.
The attack left the vehicle riddled with bullets, while blood was reportedly seen inside the bus.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to hospitals for medical attention.
Lawan Suleiman, a teacher and neighbour of one of the victims, confirmed the incident and identified the driver as Ibrahim, whom he described as his former student.
Suleiman said three of the deceased were from Bukuru community.
According to him, the bodies of the victims had been deposited at a hospital, while their relatives were making arrangements to take them home for burial.
The spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the attack, saying the victims were passengers travelling to Jos when the gunmen opened fire on the vehicle.
Tengwong disclosed that a member of Operation Rainbow was among those killed.
He added that some of the injured passengers were rushed to hospitals for treatment, while some who were initially taken to medical facilities later died.
The Plateau State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.
