JUST IN: NCDC identifies two suspected Ebola cases in north-east Nigeria

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says two suspected cases of Ebola disease have been identified in the north-east of the country.

In an update on Saturday, the agency said both individuals had been isolated, while efforts to identify and list their contacts were ongoing.

The NCDC added that laboratory tests were being conducted to determine whether the suspected cases were positive for the virus.

“Being classified as suspected cases does not mean they are confirmed Ebola cases; confirmation is subject to laboratory results,” the agency said.

The NCDC urged Nigerians to maintain proper hand hygiene, practise enhanced sanitation and adhere to public health advisories.

It assured the public that further updates would be provided as verified information becomes available.

Nigeria recorded its first Ebola case in more than a decade on October 20, after a 42-year-old Swiss woman tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain in Abuja.

The patient, who travelled to Nigeria from Uganda, was subsequently isolated and placed under medical care by Nigerian health workers.

On Monday, the federal government evacuated her to Switzerland aboard a medical aircraft. Her husband, who had been identified as a close contact, was also evacuated to the country.

Ali Pate, coordinating minister of health and social welfare, said the patient was clinically much improved, stable, conscious and communicating, with her laboratory test results approaching baseline levels.
