Defence Minister Musa commissions security research hub at University of Ibadan

Defence Minister Christopher Musa (retd.) has commissioned a security management research hub at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, with a call for closer cooperation between universities and security agencies.
The CG Musa Security Management Hub, established under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Centre of Excellence, was commissioned on Friday, 30 October, 2026.
Musa said Nigeria could not achieve lasting security through military operations alone, stressing the need for academic research to identify the causes of insecurity and develop lasting solutions.
He spoke as the Special Guest of Honour at the commissioning ceremony, where he recalled that the project began with a lecture he delivered at the university in July 2025.
Musa explains the thinking behind the hub
The minister said his decades of military service had shown him the need to identify security threats before they develop into major crises.
“The battlefield may reveal the immediate manifestations of insecurity, but the university provides the intellectual environment to interrogate its causes, evaluate responses, and develop sustainable solutions,” Musa said.
He added: “Having spent decades in military service, I have come to appreciate that effective security management begins long before the first shot is fired. We must anticipate threats long before they escalate into crises.”

Musa said President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda included institutional reforms, improved operational capabilities, strategic partnerships and the use of evidence-based analysis to strengthen national security.
He also reported progress in military operations but said citizens had responsibilities in addressing insecurity.
“We have stepped up our game in the field and are gradually improving the security situation. However, it is essential that every citizen plays a role through a whole-of-nation approach. As the saying goes, ‘if you see something, say something’,” he said.
The minister maintained that security agencies and citizens needed to work together to address threats.
Research hub to focus on emerging security threats
Musa wants the new facility to become a leading centre for research, professional training, strategic discussions and practical solutions to security problems.
He asked the university management to develop joint programmes involving academics, military personnel, law enforcement agencies, policymakers and technology specialists.
The proposed areas of study include intelligence analysis, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, conflict prevention, crisis management and community engagement.
These areas are expected to provide opportunities for academic and security professionals to examine threats, assess responses and develop practical approaches to security management.
Musa also recognised the contributions of Professor B.A. Aluko, Professor Ayo Albert, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 2 Division, personnel of the 2 Division Engineers and various university departments.
He commended them for their contributions to the successful completion of the facility.
The minister also congratulated the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor K.O. Adebowale, on completing his tenure and wished him well in his future endeavours.
He promised continued support for the University of Ibadan in its pursuit of academic excellence and solutions to national security problems.
