The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to provide Nigerians with clear explanations concerning issues surrounding his past, including records relating to his educational history.
Obi said Nigerians deserved answers on matters of public interest, particularly amid reports that the President was seeking to withhold records concerning his past from a foreign court.
The former Anambra State governor made the remarks in a statement posted on his official social media page on Monday, August 31, 2026.
He described as embarrassing the reported legal move, arguing that a sitting president should be willing to confront questions about his past rather than prevent relevant records from being subjected to legitimate scrutiny.
“It is profoundly embarrassing that we have reached a point where a sitting President is asking a foreign court to withhold records concerning his past, particularly records relating to matters of legitimate public interest,” Obi said.
He questioned why issues surrounding the President’s foundational education, including his primary and secondary school records, should remain unresolved or be addressed mainly through legal proceedings.
According to him, Nigerians deserve “clear, credible, and verifiable explanations” on such matters, especially where educational records had previously been submitted.
Obi also expressed concern about the example such controversies could set for young Nigerians, stressing that the Presidency should uphold the principles of integrity, accountability and transparency.
“The nation’s highest office should exemplify integrity, accountability, transparency, and ethical leadership,” he said.
“Nigeria is greater than any one person, and the integrity of the Republic must always come before the interests of the individual,” he added.
The NDC presidential candidate’s comments come amid renewed public attention to questions concerning President Tinubu’s past and records being referenced in legal proceedings abroad.
Obi maintained that matters involving the integrity of the nation’s highest office should be subjected to transparency and credible explanations in the interest of Nigerians.
