The All Progressives Congress (APC) has asked the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun? No. The current Inspector-General is Olutunji Rilwan Disu.
The party wants the police to investigate, arrest and prosecute Abayomi Hunye over his alleged claim to be the party’s governorship candidate in Ogun State for the 2027 election.
Politics Nigeria reports that APC made the demand in a petition dated August 24, 2026, signed by its Director of Administration, Ayoola Peter Olajolo.
The party accused Hunye of presenting himself to members of the public as its candidate despite the party’s position that Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, emerged as its recognised candidate.
In the petition, the APC alleged that Hunye had used both traditional and social media platforms to present himself as the party’s candidate for the January 2027 governorship election.
The party described the action as a serious issue capable of creating confusion among voters and supporters ahead of the election.
The petition stated: “I write to bring to your urgent attention a grave threat to public peace and electoral integrity involving one Mr. Abayomi Hunye (hereinafter referred to as “the Subject”).”
The APC further alleged: “The Subject has notoriously and unlawfully taken to the public domain, including print and social media, parading himself as the Governorship Candidate of our party for the forthcoming January 2027 election.”
According to the ruling party, Hunye’s claim was not only false but amounted to an attempt to mislead the public about the identity of the party’s candidate.
The party added: “I wish to state unequivocally that this claim is false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilize the peace of Ogun State.”
The APC also relied on Hunye’s alleged suspension from the party as part of its argument against his claim.
The party said Hunye was suspended on April 7, 2026, following a petition submitted by his ward, Tube Ward, in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State.
It said the suspension was subsequently ratified by the Ipokia Local Government chapter and approved by the Ogun State Working Committee.
The national leadership also maintained that the suspension was formally communicated to the party’s national headquarters.
The APC has therefore argued that Hunye lacks the authority to speak or act as its candidate in the governorship election.
The party also pointed to the governorship primary held earlier in the year as evidence of the candidate it recognises for the election.
Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola emerged from the exercise with 304,055 votes out of 305,287 accredited voters, according to results announced after the primary. Hunye, who was listed as the other contestant, scored zero votes.
Following the primary, the party went ahead with Adeola as its governorship candidate.
Kudirat Abiodun Adegunwa-Balogun was later selected as his running mate from Ogun East. The APC subsequently reaffirmed the pair as its candidates for the 2027 election.
The Ogun State chapter also issued a separate statement on August 23 insisting that Adeola remained the party’s only recognised candidate.
The state chapter said the names of Adeola and Adegunwa-Balogun had been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission as the party’s governorship candidate and running mate.
But Hunye has continued to dispute the process that produced Adeola. Reports on the dispute indicate that he has questioned the validity of the primary and said he was challenging the process in court.
Specifically, the party wants the IGP to invite Hunye for questioning over what it described as possible violations of Nigerian law.
The APC also requested that he be prosecuted if investigations establish that offences were committed.
The petition stated: “Invite Mr. Abayomi Hunye for immediate questioning regarding the aforementioned infringements and probable commission of offences against Nigerian Laws.”
The party further asked the police to “Cause him to be prosecuted after investigation for impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and violation of the Electoral Act, 2026.”
It also called for measures to stop Hunye from continuing to present himself as the APC governorship candidate.
The party said such an intervention was necessary to avoid confusion and prevent the political dispute from escalating into a wider public order problem.
The petition stated: “Restrain him from further parading himself as a candidate to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.”
The APC assured the police that its national headquarters and Ogun State chapter would cooperate fully with any investigation that may follow.
It also said it was prepared to provide additional documents and witness statements if requested by the police.
The police are yet to publicly announce whether they will invite Hunye or commence an investigation based on the petition.
