Governor of Niger State Mohammed Umaru Bago has described the death of the chairman, National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Aminu Yusuf, as a shock and colossal loss to the state and nation.
Sixty-six year-old- Dr Yusuf died yesterday after a brief illness. He was appointed chairman of the commission last year by President Bola Tinubu and confirmed by the Senate in October 2025 before assuming office in December 2025.
The governor in a condolence message through his chief press secretary Bologi Ibrahim to the family noted that Dr. Yusuf’s vast experience, competence and commitment to public service would greatly be missed at a crucial time when his services were needed to undertake the long awaited national census.
He said Nigeria had indeed lost an icon whose wealth of knowledge in demographic research, data management and policy implementation would have been applied for better national planning and development.
The governor extended condolences to the family and encouraged them to remain strong in the face of this trying time of losing a man whom he described as dedicated family man full of compassion and down to earth.
He prayed that Almighty Allah forgives his shortcomings, illuminate and widen his grave and grant him entry into Aljannat Firdaus.
He acknowledged the fact that he had indeed lost a rare gem and one of the finest brains in Niger State and only hoped that Allah accept all his good deeds and reward him abundantly even in death.
Dr. Yusuf was appointed last year by President Tinubu following the recommendation of the governor.
He held the traditional title of Talban Wushishi, and held various positions in Niger State and beyond.
