Afrobeats star Davido has appealed to Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma to support a peaceful and credible process ahead of the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
The singer made the call on Wednesday during a press conference in Osogbo, where he spoke about concerns surrounding security and the expected conduct of the election.
Davido’s comments have drawn attention, particularly because of his family connection to Osun State. The singer is the nephew of Governor Ademola Adeleke, who is seeking re-election.
Addressing journalists and supporters at the event, Davido said he had seen reports alleging that there could be attempts to manipulate the outcome of the election.
While noting that he could not personally confirm the reports, the singer appealed to Governor Uzodimma to use his position and influence to promote peace and uphold democratic values.
“And to our daddy from Imo State, I say this with respect, sir,” Davido said.
The singer stressed that residents of Osun State should be given the freedom to vote for their preferred candidate without fear, intimidation or undue interference.
Davido also made the appeal personal by mentioning his wife, Chioma, while explaining his connection to Imo State.
He noted that his ties to the state extend beyond politics, as Chioma is from Imo State.
“We have mutual connections, and I have a deep connection to Imo State. My wife, Chioma, is from the state, which makes this appeal more sincere,” he said.
“Please, let Osun remain peaceful”
Davido repeatedly urged political actors and other stakeholders to prioritise peace as the state approaches the election.
The singer emphasised that political interests should not come at the expense of the safety and wellbeing of Osun residents.
“Please, let Osun remain peaceful,” he said several times during the briefing, reinforcing his call for a peaceful electoral process.
