The Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, on Friday officiated the mass wedding of 1,500 couples under the state government’s Mass Wedding Programme.
The programme, coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board, brought together widows and young women with prospective spouses after undergoing screening and counselling processes.
Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Yusuf said the initiative was designed to “restore hope, strengthen families and promote moral values across the state.”
According to a statement issued by the Governor’s Spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa on Friday, the governor said the programme demonstrates his administration’s commitment to supporting vulnerable citizens by “easing the financial burden associated with marriage and creating opportunities for dignified family life in line with Islamic principles and the rich cultural heritage of Kano.”
During the marriage solemnisation, Yusuf represented the first groom and formally sought the bride’s hand in marriage from the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, who served as the bride’s guardian and accepted the proposal in accordance with Islamic injunctions.
The Emir of Kano, while delivering the Friday sermon, urged the newly married couples to build their homes on “the enduring values of faith, patience, mutual respect and compassion.”
Commander-General of the Kano State Hisbah Board, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, said all beneficiaries were subjected to thorough screening and counselling before the marriages were conducted.
He noted that “all religious and legal requirements were duly fulfilled before the marriages were conducted,” assuring that the unions complied with both Islamic and statutory provisions.
The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, also offered prayers for the newlyweds, seeking Allah’s guidance, blessings and enduring peace in their homes.
