An abroad-based Nigerian has sparked debate after warning Nigerian men who have lived overseas for years against returning to Nigeria to marry women they barely know.

According to him, men who have spent 10 to 20 years abroad already understand how the system works and should consider relationships with people who are familiar with life in their country of residence.

He said, “You can’t be a Nigerian man who has lived abroad for 10–20 years and understands how the system works there, then decide to travel back to Nigeria to marry a woman you barely know. You will always regret it. There are a lot of white people and even Nigerians living abroad, but you choose to leave the people who understand the system and travel all the way to Nigeria to get married instead.”

His comments have generated mixed reactions, with some Nigerians arguing that people should be free to choose where and whom they marry.
