The Chairman of Kuje Area Council in the Federal Capital Territory, Samuel Shekwolo, has sparked outrage after a video surfaced showing him allegedly threatening residents who do not support the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In the viral video, Shekwolo addressed a gathering of constituents and APC loyalists, insisting that residents who oppose the ruling party should leave the council.
The council chairman linked his position to developmental projects reportedly being carried out in Kuje by President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
Chairman defends his position
Shekwolo said, “I have said in my area council, it’s either you are doing APC or leave the area council; I’m not hiding that. With confidence, I’m saying it.”
He further stated, “You know why, I cannot have President and Minister doing what they are doing and on the day of election, you will want to match me.”
His comments have since generated strong reactions online, with critics accusing the council chairman of attempting to intimidate voters and restrict their freedom to support a political party of their choice.
Nigerians react to viral video
Several residents and social media users condemned the remarks, describing them as undemocratic and inappropriate for an elected public official.
Some questioned why residents should be threatened over their political choices, while others called for authorities to investigate the comments.
The FCT Police Command had not publicly commented on the matter at the time of the report.
The controversy comes as political activities and discussions around the 2027 elections continue to intensify across Nigeria.
