Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has challenged Senator Abdul’aziz Yari to reconsider his decision to serve as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, warning that the 2027 election should give Nigerians a chance to reject what he called continued oppression and hardship.
Kwankwaso, writing on X on Sunday, said the composition of the newly constituted campaign council showed that many figures associated with the present administration would again lead the ruling party into the election.
He said this placed a clear choice before Nigerians: whether to continue with the present system or choose a different direction.
The former Kano State governor said he viewed the 2027 contest as a battle between ordinary Nigerians facing hardship and people who had benefited from or supported the system responsible for their difficulties.

He listed rising food prices, unemployment, insecurity and pressure on public services among the problems facing Nigerians.
Kwankwaso said families across the country were struggling with the cost of food and other basic needs, while young people were facing fewer job opportunities.
He also said farmers and businesses were finding it difficult to survive, as millions of Nigerians continued to live with insecurity.
Appeal to Yari
Kwankwaso directed a personal appeal to Yari, a former governor of Zamfara State and prominent political figure from the North-West.
He said Yari was familiar with the effects of insecurity, poverty, unemployment, displacement and the destruction of livelihoods in Zamfara and other parts of the country.
Kwankwaso questioned whether Yari should lead a campaign aimed at returning to power a government under which, he said, many Nigerians had continued to face such problems.
“I particularly appeal to my brother, Senator Abdul’aziz Yari, who has accepted to serve as Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, to reflect deeply and reconsider accepting this responsibility,” Kwankwaso wrote.
He said he would be surprised if Yari, in good conscience, chose to lead a campaign whose main aim was to secure the continuation of the present government.
Kwankwaso also cited Osun as an example, saying voters in other parts of Nigeria could make similar choices in 2027.
“If Osun people can do it, so can all other parts of the country,” he said.
The former governor said Nigerians should use the election to demand accountable and people-centred government.
Questions over public offices
Kwankwaso also raised questions about the presence of the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji, and the Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation, Dr Tanimu Yakubu Kurfi, in the APC campaign council’s fundraising and finance structures.
He said the positions occupied by both men involved important public institutions and responsibilities connected to public revenue and national finances.
Kwankwaso questioned whether such duties could properly exist alongside senior partisan campaign responsibilities.
“The leadership of critical public institutions demands neutrality, integrity and public confidence,” he said.
He asked whether the responsibilities of senior public officials entrusted with managing public revenue and national finances could appropriately coexist with leading positions in a partisan campaign.
Kwankwaso said the Federal Government and the APC should explain how the arrangement was consistent with institutional neutrality and public trust.
The former governor maintained that political structures could not outweigh the power of voters.
“Ultimately, no campaign council is more powerful than the Nigerian people,” he said.
