LAWYER READIES COURT BATTLE AGAINST OPAY OVER ‘MISSING’ ACCOUNT STATEMENT

Fintech giant faces fresh customer-service storm as lawyer alleges prolonged delay in releasing his account statement

A popular Nigerian lawyer has threatened to drag fintech giant OPay to court over what he described as an unacceptable delay in providing his account statement despite repeated requests.

The legal practitioner raised the alarm on X, saying he had requested the financial document long ago but had yet to receive a satisfactory response from the fintech company.

His complaint has triggered a wave of reactions online, with several OPay users using the opportunity to recount their own experiences with the platform’s customer service.

One user bluntly summed up the frustration, writing: “OPay’s customer service is very poor but the network is superb.”

Another user backed the lawyer’s threat of legal action, alleging that their own account had been restricted without clear justification.

“Please do. My account has been restricted for absolutely no reason and they’re asking me to get a court order,” the user claimed.

While some commenters said they had obtained their account statements without difficulty, others accused OPay of being slow to resolve customer complaints, particularly when account restrictions or transaction disputes are involved.

The latest controversy comes amid previous complaints from customers over failed transactions, unexplained debits and difficulties getting timely assistance from the fintech company.

In 2024, reports emerged that some OPay customers were left distressed after failed transfers allegedly resulted in their accounts being debited without immediate refunds or clear explanations.

Although affected customers were eventually refunded, the incident fuelled criticism of the platform’s handling of customer complaints during technical disruptions.

Now, with a lawyer threatening legal action over access to his own financial records, questions are again being raised about OPay’s customer-service standards and how it handles complaints from customers demanding urgent account-related documentation.

For OPay, the latest uproar could become more than another social-media complaint if the threatened lawsuit eventually lands in court.
