Momodu: Tinubu lost Osun governorship election, not APC

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has claimed that President Bola Tinubu lost the just-concluded Osun State governorship election, rather than the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He made the statement on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he argued that the APC’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and former governor Gboyega Oyetola relied heavily on Tinubu’s name during the election campaign.

“Without any doubt whatsoever, he (Tinubu) lost. Who was Oyebamiji in the scheme of things? Who was Oyetola in the scheme of things?” Momodu said.

He described the APC figures in the state as “name droppers”, alleging that they repeatedly invoked Tinubu’s influence in their campaign.

Momodu also claimed that the outcome of the Osun election had unsettled the APC ahead of the 2027 general election, arguing that the result could influence voters across the country.

“And the reason I would tell you is the fear of January 2027. They are afraid that the Osun election will send a wrong signal to the electorates across Nigeria,” he said.

According to him, the election demonstrated that voters could prioritise individual candidates and their records rather than simply following the political preferences of national leaders.

“In Osun today, people are saying whether the governor supports Tinubu or not, they would support their own preferred candidate based on merit,” Momodu stated.

He also credited Afrobeat singer Davido with helping to increase public awareness during the election through his social media activities.

“I’m happy with what Davido did with social media, making sure that they were aware, he was updating them regularly, I think that also saved the day,” he said.

Momodu further alleged that there was an attempt to disrupt the collation process, claiming that vote counting was halted until late at night.

“Otherwise, till midnight, at a stage they stopped counting the votes and they were going to do their abracadabra as usual,” he alleged.
