The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu, has said some upgraded traditional rulers in Lagos could turn to land grabbing when government fails to provide the logistics needed for their offices.
Akiolu spoke on Sunday after Islamic clerics prayed for him to mark his 23rd anniversary on the throne. He did maintain that most traditional rulers and chiefs in Lagos ensure that things are done properly, but some had chosen to engage in land grabbing.
The monarch said the problem could arise after government upgrades traditional rulers without giving them the support needed to perform their duties.
“I didn’t like it at all. And I have pleaded and advised the government that when you upgrade all these people, give them the logistic support to hold that office. It was in the absence of that, they resort to land grabbing, which is not in the best interest of any human behaviour,” he said.
Monarch recalls journey to throne
Akiolu also used the anniversary to recall the day he became Oba of Lagos and the people he credited with supporting his reign.
He said the late Chief Tajudeen Gbadamosi placed the crown on him 23 years ago at Enu Owa in Lagos.

“I thank God, today is exactly 23 years ago, when the late Chief Tajudeen Gbadamosi placed the crown on me at the traditional place, Enu Owa in Lagos,” Akiolu said.
The monarch said his reign had recorded “progress, upon progress upon progress” through the blessing of God Almighty.
He also acknowledged President Bola Tinubu, who was governor of Lagos State when Akiolu became king, for his support.
Akiolu said prayers had helped him obtain direction and wisdom during his time on the throne.
The anniversary gathering therefore combined prayers for the monarch with reflections on his 23 years as Oba of Lagos and his views on traditional leadership in the state.
Guests praise monarch
Lagos State Head of Service, Olabode Agoro, described Akiolu as a father to all and praised him for being compassionate and generous.
Agoro also described the monarch as disciplined. He said Akiolu praises people when they do things correctly and does not fail to call out those who do wrong.
He said the Oba appreciates culture and sometimes writes to the state government requesting a public holiday to mark Isese Day.
Managing Director of Primero Transport Services, Fola Tinubu, also described Akiolu as a father who cares for many as his biological child.
Akiolu was praised for the wisdom with which he has managed the throne and the affairs of Lagos.
He was also said to be committed to the development of Lagos because he works towards ensuring things go well and promotes activities that support the state’s development.
