Abia State Governor Alex Otti has launched 20 more electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle Service in Umuahia, taking the state’s electric bus fleet to 40 and expanding public transport within and outside Abia.
The governor unveiled the buses on Thursday at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal. He also announced longer traffic enforcement hours and warned that motorists who break road rules will face tougher penalties.
The new buses came eight months after the first 20 electric buses entered service in December 2025. Otti said the new vehicles fulfil his administration’s promise to increase the number of buses available to passengers.

He said the buses have larger cargo compartments and facilities that make them easier for persons living with disabilities to use. He said the investment fits the state’s plan to provide public transport that is safe, affordable and environmentally friendly.
Otti said the buses would serve more routes both within Abia and to destinations outside the state. He also said the government wants more private sector participation in the transport system.
The governor said public transport in Abia has improved in recent months through investment in the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, technology-driven ticketing and more reliable shuttle services.
Alongside the bus launch, Otti announced stricter action against traffic offenders.
He warned motorists against driving against traffic, beating traffic lights, overloading vehicles and illegal parking. He said anyone caught breaking the rules would face stiffer sanctions.
To strengthen enforcement, the governor directed the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency, known as ARTSMA, and the Harmonised Taskforce to work until 10 p.m. every day, including weekends. He also ordered the deployment of more personnel to major roads.
Otti also said an independent monitoring team would be set up to check that traffic rules are properly enforced.
The governor turned to the management of the state’s transport facilities and told those in charge to keep buses, terminals and bus shelters in good condition. He also instructed them to look after the welfare of workers.
He ordered a thorough investigation and prosecution of anyone involved in vandalism or sabotage of transport infrastructure.
Abia State Commissioner for Transport Chimezie Ukaegbu said the new buses would increase services on both intra-city and inter-city routes.
He said the extra vehicles would improve access to safe and affordable transport and help improve service delivery across the state.
Ukaegbu also said measures had been put in place to ensure the new buses are properly used and well maintained.
The launch means passengers will have more electric buses available as the Abia Green Shuttle Service expands its operations. The state government also plans tighter monitoring of traffic offences and transport facilities as t he larger fleet begins operation.
