The Plateau State Police Command has arrested another suspect in connection with the alleged mob killing of a University of Jos graduate, Ibrahim Mbaya, popularly known as “Ibee.”
The latest arrest brings to five the number of suspects currently in police custody as investigations into the incident continue.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, SP Alfred Alabo, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Jos.
According to the statement, detectives acting on credible intelligence arrested 24-year-old Yusuf Christopher Beskeni over his alleged involvement in the assault that led to Mbaya’s death.
The police said preliminary investigations indicated that Beskeni allegedly participated in the assault on the deceased.
The suspect was also alleged to have helped tie Mbaya to a pole while members of the mob assaulted him.
“The suspect allegedly played an active role in the unlawful assault on the deceased. He is specifically alleged to have participated in tying the deceased to a pole while he was subjected to severe assault by members of the mob,” the statement said.
The Command said Beskeni remains in custody and is assisting with the investigation, while efforts have been intensified to arrest other suspects still at large.
The Acting Commissioner of Police in Plateau State, DCP Usman Sheikh Adamu, assured Mbaya’s family and residents of the state that the Command would ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.
Adamu said the police would leave no stone unturned in investigating the incident and prosecuting those found responsible in accordance with the law.
The Command also appealed to members of the public with useful information about the incident to report to the nearest police formation to assist the investigation.
Mbaya died on July 27 after he was allegedly assaulted by a mob over accusations of stealing a mobile phone at an off-campus residence in Jos.
His death sparked widespread condemnation and renewed calls for an end to mob justice.
