Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) etched their name alongside Real Madrid in Super Cup history on Wednesday, beating Aston Villa 2-1 in Salzburg to become only the second club in the modern era to retain the trophy.
The French champions needed every bit of their European pedigree to get past a Villa side that refused to fold. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put PSG ahead, but 17-year-old Brian Madjo produced a stunning response, becoming the youngest scorer in Super Cup history and giving Unai Emery’s side genuine belief they could pull off another European upset.
Désiré Doué eventually broke Villa’s resistance with a curling second-half strike, sealing PSG’s second successive Super Cup after last year’s penalty win over Tottenham in Udine.

Villa arrived in Austria carrying real credentials, having lifted the Europa League with a 3-0 demolition of Freiburg in May. They backed that pedigree up on the pitch, matching PSG for long stretches and drawing on a history of troubling Luis Enrique’s side.
The two clubs had met before in the 2025 Champions League quarter-finals, where Villa stunned PSG 3-2 in the return leg after trailing 3-1 from the first ultimately falling just short 5-4 on aggregate. That same fighting spirit resurfaced in Salzburg, even as PSG closed out the win.
For PSG, the result extends a remarkable run under Enrique and reinforces their status as Europe’s dominant force heading into the new season. Retaining the Super Cup puts them in company held only by Real Madrid, who managed the feat in 2016 and 2017.
The occasion carried added storylines beyond the scoreline. Somali official Omar Artan took charge of the final, months after his exclusion from the 2026 FIFA World Cup sparked controversy when he was denied entry to the United States. UEFA’s decision to hand him the Super Cup offered a notable moment of recognition.
The match itself marked a milestone for its venue too Stadion Salzburg hosted its first major UEFA club final, becoming the 14th different city to stage the Super Cup since it moved on from its long-time Monaco home.
