Sandema Underwater Again As Heavy Rains Flood Upper East Town, Residents Wade Through Streets

Parts of Sandema in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region are heavily flooded this morning following overnight heavy rainfall, with residents seen wading through knee-deep water along major streets.

Videos from the scene show flooded roads submerging entire stretches of the town, forcing residents to walk carefully through the murky waters to get around.

It’s a scene that has become distressingly familiar for Sandema, a town that sits in one of Ghana’s most flood-prone corridors, having experienced repeated severe flooding incidents in recent years, including a major flood just weeks earlier in June 2026 that damaged homes and washed away sections of the Sandema-Navrongo road.

Local officials have previously attributed the town’s recurring flooding to an abandoned drainage project and inadequate water management infrastructure, with plans for a dam at nearby Nyansa proposed as a long-term solution to ease pressure on the town during heavy rains.

In the past, Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has repeatedly cautioned residents, traders, and schoolchildren against wading through floodwaters due to safety risks.

As of now, no casualties have been reported from this latest flooding, though the scale of disruption to movement within the town remains significant.
